Fanfare at the Base of the Crucifixion (2012)

This work was intended as an overture to the program which premiered Confessions as well as Crucifixus. The piece presents melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ideas common to all three works. The title is an allusion to Francis Bacon’s painting Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, a work I have found deeply inspiring for my composing.

This work was premiered by members of the St. Olaf Percussion Ensemble with the composer conducting, March 2, 2012 at St. Olaf College.
