Confessions (2012)

Confessions is a three-movement work whose text contains themes of depression, loss of innocence, alienation, and death. The first movement, entitled “Night”, is a song of sadness from guilt. The second movement, “Dying”, is a recitation of screams of violence, inspired by a dream I had while composing the first movement. The final movement, “Lament (for a dead animal)” embodies the thoughts and feelings I experienced upon seeing the dead body of a calf to whom I had a special attachment.

This work was premiered March 2, 2012, by Katie Burk, soprano, at St. Olaf College.
